When you’re 20, pension savings it may not be the first goal on your financial checklist – if you even have one.
However, if you start saving for retirement as soon as possible, it can allow you to succeed in the long run.
“It’s completely understandable, because it’s hard when you get your first job; it’s not that you have a lot of excess funds,” said Rob Greenman, a certified financial planner and chief growth officer and partner at Vista Capital Partners in Portland, Oregon.
However, starting to put off just a little money from an early age can mean that you could save less than any salary over time, but still reach to retire earlier than you thought.
“Most people I sit with always say‘ I wish I had started earlier, ’” said Tess Zigo, CFP of Emerge Wealth Strategies in Lisle, Illinois. “No one ever says, ‘God, I wish I hadn’t invested in my twenties.’ “

Even if you don’t work, you may be able to open up to the IRA. Here’s how
The value of compound interest
The reason why it is important to start saving as soon as possible is that a longer horizon gives the compound interest more time to work.
Compound interest is when the interest you earn on a balance in a savings or investment account is reinvested, earning higher interest. It is basically money that makes money. Compound interest rates also accelerate the growth of your savings and investments over time.
Let’s say you invest $ 100 and it grows at a rate of 10% per year, which means you have $ 110 after a year. After the second year you will have $ 121, and after the third year $ 133. The amount will grow more and more every year due to compound interest rates.
It also means that you can save a lot less in the beginning if you have more time to increase and increase your investment. For those at the beginning of their career who may not be able to save consistently, putting off what you can as soon as possible can get you on the right track.
“The reality of the way the complex works is that the sooner you get going, the less you’ll have to save on the trip,” Greenman said.
Using “Rule 72“- a formula for calculating how long it will take for money to double – you can expect the money you invest to double in about 10 years,” Zigo said. If you start saving in your 20s and expect to retire in your 60s – there, you could see four decades of doubling, she said.
But if you start only a decade later, you will miss the whole cycle of doubling.
Building solid habits
Even if you can’t initially save hundreds of dollars each month, putting off retirement money as soon as possible helps young people develop strong financial habits.
It can help you see the benefits of savings and help you build other funds, such as an emergency savings fund. You may also need to work with a budget, which can help you stay on track and avoid debts over time.
And as you see the money you save for retirement start to grow, it can encourage you to continue on the path to financial freedom.
“You are motivated to continue,” Zigo said.
Get started in the simplest way possible
For most people, the easiest way to start saving for retirement is an employer-sponsored plan 401 (k).
Many people do this through work and automatically enroll in them, which means they may not even realize they have kept part of their salary for later.
If you have such a plan, make sure you invest enough to get everything your employer offers you, which is essentially free money that could double your savings.
“It’s pretty hard to beat a 100% return on investment,” Greenman said.
If you do not have an employer-sponsored retirement account, most financial experts recommend that you look at a Roth individual retirement account. You would invest money on this type of account yourself (although most advisors would also recommend setting up an automatic transfer) and it would grow tax-free until retirement.
Roth IRA
Roth IRAs are a good option for young investors for several reasons. They are only available to people who meet certain income limits, so it makes sense to open it at the beginning of your career. In 2021, your modified adjusted gross income must be less than $ 140,000 for singles and $ 208,000 for those who are married who have applied together to qualify.
The money you invest in the Roth IRA is after tax, which means you no longer owe the IRS when you retire to retire. You can withdraw any money you put in the account if you do not immediately touch the earned interest.
You may have to pay income tax if you withdraw it before you reach the 59½ retirement age or if you have had an account for less than five years. Once you have an account for five years, you can take money from it — contributions or earnings — without taxes.
“Knowing you have the flexibility and freedom to use it allows many people to leave it alone and let it grow,” said Linda Erickson, CFP, founding partner and financial advisor at Erickson Advisors in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Roth IRAs also offer more flexibility in terms of trading than an employer-sponsored plan. This can be useful for people who want to trade more often or want to ensure that their portfolios meet their ethical standards, Greenman said.
Of course, this can also be a problem if people add too much risk.
“Be careful not to fall for some of the mistakes made by a large number of people, and that is an attempt to measure time in the market and choose stocks,” Greenman said.
